Within the study of portraiture, I am not only fascinated by capturing a moment of someone but how to describe the personality of an individual with paint. Visually displaying my own relationship with each individual and parts of their character is what started this body of work. Trying to capture the physical aspects of the individual so the viewer is able to recognize this person from previously seeing them or personally knowing them is the main goal. Trying to display the individual as I know them through the relationship we share and parts of their personality comes from color choice, abstraction, and differing brush strokes. What is interesting is how the color choice and brush strokes can be similar in some portraits yet they display a different relationship and personality trait. Blurred areas may represent a shorter relationship in one and a freer spirited personality in another. These conclusions are made by combining all aspects of the painting together.
Having a close relationship with someone is rare and unique. For one to allow themselves to be vulnerable and reveal their true self to another is how real connections are made and a friendship is established. Capturing the moment when someone is purely themselves and filled with joy through a painting, allows the viewer to experience that rarity. I wanted to show others the depth of the people I share a close connection to and allow them to see their personalities through color choice, brush strokes, and abstraction.
