Bio
Richard Crowson has enjoyed a long career as an editorial cartoonist putting his own satirical spin on the news of the day. His cartoons have been featured in The Wichita Eagle for many years and can also be found on KMUW’s website and social media.
Crowson is not only a editorial cartoonist, he’s also an editorial commentator for KMUW, an artist and a banjo player. You might have heard him play with his band Pop & The Boys or with his wife at their standing gig at Watermark Books & Cafe.
Artist Statement
The works in this show represent my attempts to move from the world of cartooning into the world of painting. I have a ways to go: They’re sort of cartoons produced with paint and ink. I’m interested in the relationship of those two worlds, at least as far as my abilities can convey it.
Because I’ve created these works during some rather miserable times (pandemicwaves, attacks on democracy, intensified political polarization) I’m surprised thatthey are, for the most part, light-hearted images. They may represent escapism, cathartic self defense mechanisms or the mere frolics of the child inside of me. I’m content if they simply elicit a smile, either at the imagery or at the spectacle of a cartoonist puzzled by acrylic paint.
